ABSTRACT

Uncertainty Issues in GIS and Spatial Databases

F. Petry

Geographic Information Systems(GIS) is the rather general term for a number of approaches to the management of carteographic information. At the heart of a GIS is a spatial database. The issue of spatial database accuracy has been viewed as critical to sucessful utilization of GIS. Users of GIS technology must be able to assess and deal with inherent uncertainty involved in the spatial approximations in a GIS. The objective of this presentation is to first provide a basic understanding of GIS and spatial databases. Then the major uncertainty issues in dealing with spatial data will be reviewed and fuzzy set approaches that have been developed to manage these isssues will be described.
