EXPLANATION OF THE FILES AND CONTENTS

Explanation of File Types

There are several types of files in this package. These are most easily identfied by the filetype, i.e. the files are organized by filename.filetype.

The primary files in the DISSc package are composed of files are written in

  • LaTeX - These have the .tex ending and contain the document text and commands;

  • PostScript - The postscript files are typically those which end in .ps or .eps. The output from the scripts used to produce postscript files (using the dvips utility) are modified to produce postscript files with the .dps type. This is to allow postscript files which are produced by dvips to be cleaned up (postscript files having .ps, .eps, or .PS ending are assumed to contain figures which are not removed during a cleanup. In this document the figures have .PS extension);

  • Style Files - These have the .cls, .sty and .bst endings and provide control of typesetting. The LaTeX2E version has moved from using style files to classes;

  • Font Definition Files - These have the .fd endings and define the AMS font extensions. If your setup is using teTeX, you will not have to access these. If your system does not find these file, then move them from the ./fd directory to the directory where DISSc.tex is located.

  • HTML Files - These have the .html endings and provided help on this package.

  • E FIles - These are executable scripts beginning with E which permit the execution of several routine tasks.

Note that if your installation of TeX supports the AMS extensions, you do not need to include the .fd files in your directory. The distribution on pax.st.usm.edu support AMS.

Explanation of Subdirectories

  • amsdoc - Contains files document the AMS LaTeX extensions;

  • bin - Contains the E shell scripts used by the Makefile;

  • bst - Contain some bibliography database style files. You can use plain.bst, or choose one consistent with your scientfic research publishing requirements;

  • chapter - Contains the contents of the chapters of the sample dissertation in the DISSc package.

  • diss_html - Contains the html files which document this package;

  • doc - Contains additional documentaton material;

  • fig - Contains the PostScript figures used in this example;

  • lib - Contains the information and database need to run Ebib;

  • preamble - Contains the preable file defining macros and command and the files needed to generate the front pages of the dissertation.

    sty - Contains the style files (used by AMS and the obsolete style files used to produce DISSc.tex (now using cls files).

Explanation of LaTex File Contents

Within each of the LaTeX files there are explanations of how to use the file to produce different components of the document. Comments explaining usage and providing examples of this usage are found throughout the files of this document. These files all have the name DISS_*.tex and are located in the main directory, or in the subdirectories ./preamble and ./chapter in this distribution.

Each file DISS_chap*.tex in the directory ./chapter contains a chapter illustrating the use of many common environments. These are also annotated with comments beginning with

%((EXAMPLE))

If you look for these, you will see examples of different environments. In addition in DISS_chap4.tex, the AMS document testmath.tex has been modified and imported to illustrate the use of some more sophisticated techniques for typesetting math using some of the expanded font sets and macros available from the AMS.

A detailed description of the individual files is provided in File Descriptions

Explanation of AMS LaTeX File Contents

The AMS extensions are the ams*.sty and *.fd files in the main directory of this distributions. In addition in the ./amsdoc directory are files which explain the use of the AMS LaTeX.
