The Math Zone

The Math Zone is a Math Emporium type math learning facility at the University of Southern Mississippi. Currently we are offering MAT 099-Intermediate Algebra and MAT 101-College Algebra courses there. The Math Zone also hosts the Math Tutoring Center on its second floor. Every year, about 3,500 students are taking MAT 099 or MAT 101 courses in the Math Zone. We are planning to offer a new course STAT 101-Introduction to Statistics in the Math Zone in the near future.

I served as the Math Zone Director from June, 2011 to June, 2012. As the Director, I oversaw daily operations that are managed by the Math Zone coordinator, Corwin Stanford, and I was also responsible for administrative tasks in the Math Zone. My other duties included Math Zone course and teaching scheduling, and communications with students. Communicating with students was a big part of my daily job in the Math Zone. Everyday I dealt with student's complaints, personal difficulties, their problems with course enrollment or MyMathLab Plus (the math learning software from Pearson that we are using in the Math Zone). I was also responsible for course curricula and the assessment of the Math Zone courses. My duties also included future planning, and designing and offering of new Math Zone courses. In addition, I was in charge of developing and offering online mathematics courses. My role in the Math Zone was not only an administrator but also a liaison between the Department of Mathematics and the Math Zone.
