Determination of Class Grade
The class grade is based on the student's earned point score for the semester. This earned point score is computed using the average of all points earned on papers to which the bonus points are then added. The class grade is assigned based on

Example Student Grades

An Undergraduate Student Example in a lower level class. If on four examination papers a student in MAT3XX earns, 70, 90, 40 and 35 points and completes 5 bonus problems worth 28 points on which the student earns 17 bonus points, the points earned are computed as:

17 + (70 + 90 + 40 + 35)/ 4 = 17 + 58.75 = 59 + 17 = 76

This student will receive a grade of C for the course. Points are always rounded up to the nearest integer.

A Graduate Student Example in a mixed graudate/undergraduate class. If on two examination papers a student in MAT5XX earns 70 and 90 points, and earns a total of 18 bonus points, the score is computed as follows:

18/2 + (70 + 90)/2 = 9 + 80 = 89

Since the student is taking the 500 level course, the Bonus score is halved and the final score is

89 - 10 = 79

that is, the students grade is reduced by 10 points (one letter grade). If on the graduate project assignment the student earns 7 out of the 10 points possible, the grade is then

79 + 7 = 86

which is a B letter grade.

A Graduate Student Example in a graduate class. If on two examination papers a student in MAT6XX earns 70 and 90 points, and earns a total of 7 bonus points, the score is computed as follows:

7 + (70 + 90)/2 = 7 + 80= 87

For the graduate in this class, the grade is a B. There is no reduction in grade and the bonus points are not halved. Why is this? Compared to the student in MAT5XX, this student appears to have a more difficult grading policy. In fact, quite the contrary is true. The level of problems, lectures and exam questions in MAT4XX/MAT5XX is typically aimed at providing an assessment of undergraduates. Thus, MAT5XX student should find these questions significantly easier and the grade is therefore reduced to account for the difference in MAT5XX and MAT4XX content and coursework.
